Þórunn moved to Canada in 1876 with her fiancé, Þorsteinn Bjarnason. They first lived with Þorkell Bessason and his wife in New Iceland and there Þorsteinn died shortly after the start of 1877. In the spring of the same year, Þórunn and her sons moved north to the Hnausa Settlement with Þorkell and his family. She continued to live with the family, but in the autumn of 1878 she, now a newlywed, moved to Ásgarður in the Hnausa Settlement. In 1881 they moved to the Eyford Settlement N. Dakota where Þórunn gave birth to a son, but soon after they divorced and Job moved to the Mouse River Settlement. Þórunn remained for some years in N. Dakota with her two sons but then moved north to the Brown Settlement in Manitoba. When her sons settled in the Víðir Settlement northwest of Arborg, Þórunn moved to them.
