Stígur came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1881 with his widowed mother, Vilborg Jónsdóttir, and his siblings. They moved south to the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota and Stígur bought land there. Þórunn came west to Winnipeg in 1876 together with her parents Björn Pétursson and Ólafia Ólafsdóttir, and siblings. Her brother Páll emigrated to Canada in 1873. They first lived in New Iceland, but then moved south to Pembina Hills in N. Dakota in 1880. Stígur and Þórunn lived in the Akra Settlement until 1921 when they moved to California.
