Þórunn came west in 1883 with her parents, Jón Jónsson Austmann and Guðlaug Halldórsdóttir, who settled in the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota. Halldór was the son of Sigurður Stefánsson and Guðbjörg Pétursdóttir in Skagafjörður. He was adopted by his father’s sister, Engilráð Stefánsdóttir, and her husband Hallur Ásgrímsson. They came west in 1883 and brought Halldór with them. When he came west, Halldór took his stepfather’s last name. They settled near Mountain, N. Dakota. Halldór and Þórunn were in Minnesota before the turn of the century, but then moved to Cavalier County in N. Dakota.
