Magnús came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, Hjalti Hjaltason and Margrét Helgadóttir, in 1888. They settled in the Thingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan. Magnús received a medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1909 and practiced medicine in many locations in the province.
