Þórunn was the daughter of Jón Valdemar Þorláksson and Petrína Guðnadóttir. She finished high school in N. Dakota, studied at North Dakota University for several summers, taught in several public schools in the state, and then completed her degree in nursing at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She moved to San Francisco in 1927 and worked as a nurse in a hospital in that city for a few years. She and her husband lived in Oakland, California.
