Þuríður came west in 1903 with her parents, Guðbrandur Jörundsson and Jóhanna Ásgeirsdóttir, and siblings. The family settled in the Shoal Lake Settlement (Grunnavatnsbyggð) in Manitoba. Þuríður attended school there, but at a young age she moved to Winnipeg and learned how to sew clothes. She moved to Los Angeles in 1929 with her sister, Adelaide. Þuríður’s husband was also in the clothing industry and they worked together in the city for some years.
