Þuríður Jónsdóttir was born on July 10, 1863 at Gautlöndum in S. Þingeyjarsýsla. She died in Gimli on May 28, 1925.

Spouse: July 22, 1895 in Duluth, Minnesota:  Helgi Stefánsson b. in S. Þingeyjarsýsla on June 8, 1865, d. in Saskatchewan on April 27, 1916.

Children: Sigurbjörg b. November 13, 1897 in Mountain, N. Dakota.

Þuríður was the daughter of Jón Sigurðsson, member of the Althing at Gautlöndum who d. 1889, and his wife, Solveig Jónsdóttir who d. 1889. Þuríður was sent to Denmark where she learned to sew, Danish, and English. No doubt the circumstances in Gautlönd after her parents’ death have been difficult for Þuríður, so she did not hesitate to move west a year after her fiancé, Helgi, went to Winnipeg. Þuríður left on June 15, 1891; she had sent Helgi a letter about the expected date of arrival in Canada, but the letter did not arrive in time and Helgi was not standing on the pier in Quebec. She decided to accompany friends to Duluth, Minnesota, where she found work. Helgi received the news that Þuríður had come west and was in Duluth, and there they met. From there, they moved to Mountain, N. Dakota in 1895, where they lived for 10 years. They moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskacthewan and settled in Wynyard. Þuríður moved to her daughter’s home in Winnipeg after Helgi’s death in 1916, and later to Lund and finally to Gimli.
