Tómas came west in 1876 and lived the first years in the Árnes Settlement in New Iceland. In 1883, his mother, María Kristín Guðmundsdóttir, came west and around that time, Tómas bought land in the Geysir Settlement, naming the farm Hjarðarhaga. Later he bought the farm Sólheima and moved there.
