Tómas Sæmundsson was born in Gullbringusýsla in 1886.
He was the son of Sæmundur Sigurðsson and Steinunn Arinbjörnsdóttir who came west in 1893 to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Tómas was 18 years old when he took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in. He later sold his land and moved west to the Pacific.
