Tómas was the son of Tómas Ágúst Jónasson and Guðrún Egedía Jóhannsdóttir. Tómas Ágúst was the full brother of Sigtryggur, the father of New Iceland. Tómas and Guðrún came west to Manitoba in 1876 and settled in the Fljóts (Icelandic River) settlement a year later. Tómas the younger took over his father’s estate but ran an inn at the same time, sometimes working in logging and fish transport for many years. Magnúsína Helga’s parents were Jón Borgfjörð Magnússon and Guðrún Eggertsdóttir.
