Tómas Þórðarson was born in 1858 in Eyjafjarðarsýsla. He took the last name Paulson in the west.

Tómas came west alone to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883. He stayed there for just a short time because he went to N. Dakota the same fall and was there through the winter. In the summer of 1884, he moved back to Winnipeg, where he worked for three years as a carpenter. He returned to N. Dakota and worked there for the next two years, but in the fall of 1889 he moved to the Þingvalla settlement of Saskatchewan. He lived there until 1898, when he took land in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) northeast of Leslie. Þórunn came west with her parents, Jóhannes Bjarnason and Lilja Daníelsdóttir, in 1883.
