Torfi came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888. He lived there until 1890 but then moved to the Argyle Settlement. He lived there until 1909 and moved to Glenboro. He moved west to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskachewan together with his brother-in-law, Kristján Jónsson, and opened a store in Wynyard, which he ran until 1920. He visited Iceland in 1914.
