Una Kristbjörg Jónsdóttir was born in N. Dakota on November 19, 1893. She died on October 21, 1958 in Grand Forks, N. Dakota. She was known as Bertha Beck in the west.

Una was the daughter of Jón Jónasson and Guðbjörg Ólafsdóttir in N. Dakota. At a young age, she went to live with relatives in Winnipeg, where she grew up. She finished high school, studied nursing and graduated as a nurse in 1917. She was recruited into the Canadian Army Nursing Corps, was sent to England where she served for almost two years. She returned to Winnipeg, worked in nursing there and elsewhere in Manitoba. She then studied nursing in New York and Ithaca, where she met her husband and got married. They lived first in Northfield, Minnesota, later in Greenville, Pennsylvania and from 1929 in Grand Forks, N. Dakota. More about Una in Icelandic heritage (Íslensk arfleifð) below.
