Unnur Sigurlaug Ísleifsdóttir was born on August 30, 1906 in Manitoba.

Unnur was the daughter of Ísleifur Guðjónsson and Guðleif Jónsdóttir who came west in 1884 and settled in Álftavatns-Grunnavatnsbyggð (Swan Lake – Shoal Lake Settlements) in Manitoba. Hjörtur studied shoemaking in Reykjavík and worked there for a few years before coming west to Winnipeg in 1912. From there he went to the Lundar Settlement where he worked in agriculture until 1945. He then moved to Winnipeg and worked as a shoemaker.
