Valdimar was a seaman in Iceland and attended the seaman’s school in Reykjavik. He continued his studies in Denmark and then obtained a shipping license in Akureyri in 1904. He sailed west to San Francisco after heavy rains in 1907, and went from there to New Iceland where he bought land in the Víðir Settlement. Kristveig moved to the Árdals Settlement with her parents, Metúsalem Jónsson and Ásu Ingibjörg Einarsdóttir, in 1900. He worked in retail and as a teacher in Hnausa.
