Valdimar Steingrímur Thorlakson was born southwest of Mountain, ND on November 24, 1886.
Unmarried and childless.
He was the son of Jón Valdemar Þorláksson and his wife Petrína Guðnadóttir. Valdimar finished his high school education, was in the military 1917-19 and was sent to England in March 1918. There he worked in a group of engineers near Lyon and various other places in France. He did various railroad jobs, mostly blacksmithing, after his return and worked widely in cities in the United States. In 1944 he settled in Oakland, California and lived there after that. While living in Wisconsin, he sang in church choirs and also in a Nordic quartet called The Vikings.
