Valdimar was the son of Stefán Eiríksson and Pálína Sigríður Stefánsdóttir, early pioneers in New Iceland in 1888. He grew up there and lived near Gimli his entire life. Guðný was the daughter of Björn Hallgrímur Jónsson and Guðfinna Sigurðardóttir who came west from Dalasýsla in 1887.
