Valentinus was the son of Ketil Valgarðsson and Soffía Sveinbjarnardóttir of Gimli where Valentinus grew up. He completed his elementary education there and moved to Winnipeg in 1912, first working in a bank but then going on to college and completing his B.A. degree from the University of Manitoba in 1921. He taught at the school part-time and continued his studies. He completed his M.A. degree there in 1923 and in the fall of 1924, he was appointed a teacher at Central College in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where he taught for the rest of his life. Þórunn was the daughter of Vilhjálmur Sigurgeirsson and Kristín Þóra Helgadóttir in Mikley.
