Valgeir was the son of Jón Hallgrímsson and Sigríður Sigfúsdóttir Bergmann in the Garðar Settlement where Valgeir grew up. The family moved from there west to Oregon, but moved from there to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1905. Lára came west to Winnipeg in 1893 with her parents, Páll Eyjólfsson and Jónína Jónasdóttir.
