Valgerður was the daughter of Guðni Backman and Kristín Sigfríður Sigurbjarnardóttir in Clarkleigh, Manitoba. Stefán was the son of Kári Stefánsson Byron and Anna Mýrdal in Lundar. He attended elementary school and finished 11th grade but then enlisted in the army and served in the military in a special engineering department until 1941. He then became a farmer in the Lundar settlement.
