Valgerður was the daughter of Sveinbjörn Jónsson and Sigþrúður Gísladóttir in New Iceland. After her mother’s death in 1917, Valgerður was adopted by Valgerður Hallgrímsdóttir (Backman) and Jóhann Stefánsson (Johann Stephanson) in Kandahar, Saskatchewan. Like her sisters, Elínborg and Guðlaug, Valgerður studied nursing and worked as a nurse in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð).
