Valgerður came west in 1887 with her brother Guðmundur and his family. Þorfinnur, Jón, and Helga followed their mother west, Kristbjörg came west a few years later. After a short stay in Winnipeg the family moved west to the Argyle settlement and there Valgerður lived for a few years with Brynjólfur Gunnlaugsson and his family.
