Valgerður came west with his parents, Hallgrímur Guðmundsson and Þórey Ingimundardóttir, to the United States in 1888 and first came to New York. The family moved from there to Duluth and his sister, Jónína, was born there on August 23, 1891. They moved to Selkirk, Manitoba in 1893 and lived there. Jóhann came west in 1883 to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, Stefán Jónsson and Ingibjörg Jóhannsdóttir. They settled in the Ísafold Settlement in New Iceland. Jóhann worked for 13 years in fishing, either on Lake Winnipeg or north on Winnipegosis. He bought land in Selkirk and moved there in 1901. From there, he moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1907 though he had bought the land in 1905.
