Vernharður was the son of Sveinn Kristjánsson and Veroníka Þorkelsdóttir, early settlers in N. Dakota in 1883 and in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in 1905. Vernharður grew up and attended school there. He joined the Canadian army and served in Europe 1915-1919. After that he worked as a watchmaker and had his own shop in Dafoe.
