Vigfús emigrated west to Ontario, Canada with his parents, Einar Bjarnason and Sesselja Guðmundsdóttir, in 1887. They settled in the Muskoka district. Vigfús lost his father in 1888 and was sent to Gísli Einarsson to raise as a foster-son. Vigfús worked widely in Ontario where he lived the rest of his life.
