Vigfús moved to Canada in 1875 with his parents, Jón Guttormsson and Pálína Ketilsdóttir. They took land in the Fljóts settlement and named their land Víðivellir. Vigfús grew up there. Vilborg’s parents, Pétur Árnason and Friðrika Björnsdóttir, came west in 1876 and took land in the Fljóts settlement. There the paths of Vigfús and Vilborg converged, and they started farming. In 1903 they bought land in the Shoal Lake settlement (Grunnavatnsbyggð), moved from there four years later and settled in Oak Point. They were farming in the settlement, but in addition, Vigfús was the postmaster of the village from 1909 to 1920. Before the railroad was laid north to the lake from Oak Point, Vigfús took care of bringing the mail from there to Deerhorn. Others then took care of mail distribution to the northernmost settlements. In 1919 they moved to Lundar, where they lived after that.
