Hann was the son of Daníel Grímsson and Sigríður Þorsteinsdóttir who came west in 1885 and settled in Garðar, N. Dakota. He moved with them to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1906 and grew up there. He was in the Canadian army 1917-1919 like his brother Jón Helgi and together they settled in South Bend, Indiana. They both worked for a time for an electrical company. Jón retired early, but Vilberg was there his whole career.
