Vilhelm Gunnarsson was born in Ísafjarðarsýsla in 1886. He was known as Wilhelm Olson or Vilhelm Gunnar Olson in the west.
Vilhelm was the son of Mikaelína Friðfinnsdóttir and Gunnar Olson in Ísafjörður. He came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba, unmarried and childless, in 1905. He moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and took land in the Kandahar/Dafoe area, but quickly sold his land and moved back to Manitoba.
