Vilhelmína came west in 1887 to Winnipeg with her parents, Jónatan Jónatansson and Ingibjörg S. Benediktsdóttir, who settled in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. Vilhelmína and Andrew began farming in N. Dakota but moved north after the turn of the century to Crystal City, Manitoba. They lived for a few years in Cartwright before moving to the Brown Settlement. They rented land there, but in 1913 they moved to Morden.
