Vilhjálmur came west to Canada in 1893 with his parents, Guðmundur Ögmundsson and Sigríður Þorláksdóttir. In 1900, he was registered as living in the town of Ballard in King County, Washington, and working in a sawmill. Svava came to the west in 1883 with her mother, Guðný Þorleifsdóttir. They moved west to Birch Bay, Washington in 1888. Svava’s mother sold her land and house to Vilhjálmur and Svava after 1916.
