Vilhjálmur’s parents, Jóhannes Sveinsson and Soffía Vilhjálmsdóttir, emigrated west to Minneota, Minnesota in 1885. Three of their children came with them, but Vilhjálmur was not listed in that group. His friend and cousin, Hóseas Þorláksson, went to Canada in 1883 and although Vilhjámur is not his registered companion, they lived together in Whatcom County, Washington in 1930.
