Jóhann Hjörtur came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1897 with his mother, Sigurbjörg Helgadóttir, and half-brother Kristján. Jóhann worked there until 1900 when he returned to Iceland to collect his fiancée, Kristína Þorsteinsdóttir. He spent the winter at her house in Húsafell. The story goes that her parents were against their marriage, so Kristín and Jóhann sneaked away and rode north to Akureyri, where they got on a ship and sailed away in 1901. They got married in Winnipeg that same year and lived there for the next three years. Then they bought land in the Lundar settlement, where they lived after that.
