Guðmundína moved to Winnipeg in 1887 with her mother, the widow Helga Pálsdóttir. Ingjaldur came to the West in 1888 with his mother, Þóra Kristófersdóttir, and siblings. His father, Ingjaldur, came west a year earlier and waited for the family in Winnipeg. There Ingjaldur learned gold smithing and watch repair, settled in Selkirk but returned to Winnipeg in 1891.
