Hannes Kristjánsson was born at Tjörnes in N. Þingeyjarsýsla on September 6, 1883. He died in Manitoba on January 23, 1957.

Hannes was the son of Kristján Sigurjón Guðmundsson and Helga Jóhanna Þórðardóttir, who came west in 1888 and settled in New Iceland. Hannes grew up there and attended school in Gimli. He lived there the rest of his life. Elín came west in 1903 with her father, Magnús Jóhannsson.
