Guðrún Helgadóttir was born at Kristnes in Eyjafjarðarsýsla in 1865. She died on January 27, 1922.

They came west in 1888 and first lived in New Iceland. From there they moved to Selkirk and Hjálmar worked there at a shop in the company of Jón Sigurðsson, his brother-in-law. From there they moved to the Hóla settlement in 1892 and lived there for a while. They purchased better land near the Assiniboine River where they lived until 1912. They sold that land and bought another east of Glenboro where they lived for six years. They sold their land in the Hóla settlement and moved to the Árdals-Framnes settlement.
