Steinn Ólafur Sveinsson was born in Winnipeg on November 23, 1893. He was known as Dr. Thompson in the west. He died in Manitoba on August 17, 1972.

Steinn grew up with his parents, Sveinn Tómasson and Sigurlaug Steinsdóttir, in Selkirk. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg and earned a B.A. degree in 1924. He was in the Canadian Army in the First World War 1916-1918. He then went back to college and completed his medical degree in 1921. He was a doctor in Riverton from 1922. Þórdís was the daughter of the poet Gunnstein Eyjólfsson, who moved west in 1876, and Guðfinna Eiríksdóttir.
