Magnús Jónasson was born in Skagafjarðarsýsla on August 15, 1889.

Magnús came to the West in 1912 and went to Wynyard, Saskatchewan. He worked for farmers in the summer and fished on Lake Manitoba in the winter. He was in the Canadian Army from 1916-19 and fought in France. After returning home, he bought land near Wynyard and farmed there for two decades. He then moved to Wynyard and worked in the store. Margrét had a Norwegian father, but her mother, Guðný Sigríður Sumarliðadóttir, was a granddaughter of Bóla-Hjálmar.
