Hjörleifur grew up in the Árnes settlement but moved from there in 1905 to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and took land in the Wynyard settlement. He was appointed the first superintendent of the Farmers’ Co-op Granary built in the settlement. Later he purchased a corn mill in Wynyard and operated it for years.
