He came to the West with his parents, Jón Jónsson and Karítas Einarsdóttir, in 1901. They lived in West Selkirk, Manitoba for five years, then moved to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1906. They took land near Mozart where Magnús was a farmer.
