Mathias was ordained by Rev. Matthías Jochumsson and was named after him. His parents were Þorlákur Þorfinnsson and Guðríður Guðmundsdóttir, settlers in N. Dakota. They lived in Mountain for a long time. Mathias completed his elementary school education in Munich, N. Dakota, and graduated with a B. Sc. degree in soil science in 1917 from the State University of N. Dakota. He was an agricultural consultant in many Icelandic settlements in the state from 1917-1926, and in Minnesota from 1926-1936. He was appointed state advisor in Minnesota from 1936.
