Sigfús was the son of Jón Sigfússon Thorlacius in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and Guðrún Rósa Jóhannesdóttir. He grew up in White Sands, a district northwest of Yorkton, Saskatchewan. In 1903, the family move to Vatnabyggð and settled near Leslie. Sigfús began farming there in 1932. Lenora was the daughter of Halldór Gíslason, a farmer in Leslie and his Danish wife, Rasmine Mikkelsen.
