Guðni Ólafsson was born in Borgarfjarðarsýsla on September 21, 1883. He died in Manitoba on August 22, 1959. He took the last name Thorleifsson in the west.

Guðni was the son of Ólafur Þorleifsson and Sesselja Guðbjörg Guðnadóttir, who came west in 1887. They first lived in Big Point, east of Lake Manitoba, but moved from there in 1894 to Langruth and lived there. Guðni was a farmer at first, but after he married, he turned to blacksmithing. Signý was the daughter of Jóhann Gottfred Jónasson and Sigurborg Pálsdóttir, early settlers in the Argyle settlement in Manitoba. She became a teacher and taught in many parts of Manitoba for 21 years.
