Þórður Ólafsson was born in Mjóaförður in S. Múlasýsla on August 31, 1891. He had the last name Anderson in the west.

Þórður was the son of Ólafur Árnason and Sólrún Árnadóttir, who came west to Manitoba with their seven children in 1903. They settled in New Iceland, first living in Gimli, then in Mikley, then two years in the Ísafold settlement, and lastly in the Geysir settlement. After completing his military service in 1916-1919, Þórður worked for farmers in his hometown and then took over his parents’ farm. He last lived with his sister Ingibjörg in Framnes in the Geysir settlement.
