Guðný Jakobína Guðnadóttir was born at Vopnafjörður, N. Múlasýsla on October 3, 1885. She took the last name Nordal with marriage.

Guðný came west to Manitoba in 1888 with her parents, Guðni Jónsson and Jakobína Sigurðardóttir. The family settled in the Argyle settlement, but both parents died there shortly after, and Guðný was then taken in by Friðrik Jónsson and family in the settlement. After almost two years there, Guðný was fostered by Guðný Aradóttir, where she remained for the next two years. She then went to be fostered by Steingrímur Guðnason in the settlement and stayed with him until she married. She and Magnús moved to the Brúar settlement in Argyle in 1908, and Guðný remained there until 1941. Then she moved to Winnipeg.
