Kristján came west in 1874 and stayed in Kinmount, Ontario the first year. He was part of the Land Survey Crew in the summer of 1875, which laid out the settlement area in New Iceland. He moved there that year, living in the Víðirnes Settlement and naming his farm Lund. He moved to Winnipeg and then to the Argyle Settlement in 1881. He took land there but then moved to Baldur in 1890 and started a trading business.
