Sigmundur Jónsson was born on January 1, 1845 in N. Múlasýsla. He died on April 28, 1903 in the Argyle Settlement in Manitoba. He changed his name to Sigmundur J. Johnson in the west.

Sigmundur and Soffía came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 and stayed in New Iceland. Sigmundur took land in the Víðirnes Settlement and named his farm Bjarðarhaga in honor of his family from Hjarðarhaga in Jökuldal. His mother, the widow Guðlaug Sigmundsdóttir, his siblings, and other relations traveled with them.  In 1880, Sigmundur moved to Winnipeg and stayed there one year before moving to the Pembina Settlement in N. Dakota, and then moved to the Garðar Settlement in 1883.  They moved once again north to the Argyle Settlement in Manitoba in 1902.
