Jakob Sigurðsson was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla on February 16, 1827. He died in N. Dakota on January 20, 1921. He took the name Eyfjörð in the west.

They came west to Ontario, Canada in 1873 and traveled on to Parry Sound. They traveled in 1875 to New Iceland and lived there until 1878. They moved to Winnipeg and lived there until the spring of 1881 when they moved and took land south of Mountain, N. Dakota. The settlement that formed there, Eyford Settlement, was named by Jakob Eyfjörð.
