They came to Winnipeg, Manitoba the same year, traveled north to New Iceland, and settled in the Víðirnes Settlement at the farm Eyjólfsstaður. In the spring of 1880 Eyjólfur moved to Winnipeg, worked there the summer, and then went south to N. Dakota and took land in the Fjalla Settlement. The land was not recorded since the survey had not been completed. He returned after losing his right hand. He struggled to continue farming at Eyjólfsstöður, but later sold the land. He also took land in the Álftavatns Settlement in Manitoba but did not move there. Instead, he went back to where his roots were in Winnipeg and lived there rest of his time.
