Jón Hallgrímsson was born in S. Þingeyjarsýsla on May 1, 1848. He died in Saskatchewan on September 14, 1917.

Jón emigrated west in 1873 and lived in various places in the U.S. and Canada the first two years. He moved to New Iceland and lived there until 1878 when he moved to N. Dakota and took land near Hallson. He lived there over a year before moving to the Garðar Settlement and took land near the location of where the village of Gardar would later rise. In 1902, he moved west to Warrenton, Oregon and lived there before moving to the Vatnabyggð Settlement in Saskatchewan in 1905. He bought land in the Wynyard Settlement, north of Wynyard.
