Guðmundur Jónsson was born in S. Þingeyjarsýsla in 1854.

Guðmundur emigrated west to Kinmount, Ontario in 1874 with his sister Sigríð. They travelled together to Winnipeg and settled there. Guðmundur ran a clothing store on the corner of Ross and Isabel Streets. On the floor above the store was a large hall, North West Hall, where Icelanders in the city held a wide variety of events.
